A Diverse Community

From its beginnings more than 400 years ago, the Richmond Region has been shaped by a variety of diverse groups, all with unique traditions and cultures. Thousands of years before Captains Christopher Newport and John Smith discovered the Region in 1607, Native Americans had settled in the area, establishing traditions that continue today.

Following the Civil War, the Jackson Ward community became known as the "Harlem of the South" and the birthplace of black capitalism. The history and contributions of African Americans are the focus of the Black History Museum and Cultural Center and the Maggie L. Walker Historic Site.

Located in Jackson Ward, the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, illustrates stories of the neighborhood.

In response to the Region's growing Hispanic community, the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was formed in 2000 to offer support and education for Hispanic and non-Hispanic-owned businesses. The Metropolitan Business League, dedicated to furthering minority and small-business development, also promotes multicultural economic growth in the Region.

Richmond's Jewish community also continues to grow, while remembering its past. The Virginia Holocaust Museum, Beth Ahabah Museum and Archives, and the Hebrew Cemetery all honor the individuals and events that helped shape Jewish history.

For visitors looking for some ethnic flair, check out the Region's many cultural festivals. Delight in traditional music and dance at the annual Greek Festival, sample your favorite Korean or Vietnamese dish at the Asian American festival or show your pride at the Gay Pride Festival, held each fall in one of the area's many outdoor locations. No matter your taste or interest, we probably have a festival to celebrate it!
